S&P backs top ratings for bond insurers MBIA, Ambac

Standard & Poor's renewed the highest credit ratings of battered bond insurers MBIA and Ambac, easing the fear that downgrades would create a ripple effect of losses through the banking system. S&P suggested it could still downgrade Ambac, depending on the result of private talks between banks and rating agencies on a $3 billion rescue plan for the bond insurer.
