Data on jobs, durable goods hint at faltering economic recovery

Orders for durable goods dropped 0.6% in January, according to the Commerce Department. Nondefense capital goods also fell, declining 2.9% as businesses scaled back. Meanwhile, initial claims for unemployment benefits increased 22,000 to a seasonally adjusted 496,000 for the week that ended Feb. 20.
