New York City teacher ratings are released to the public

New York City teachers' ratings from three academic years ending in 2010 were released to the public on Friday, following a failed legal battle by the United Federation of Teachers to block the release. The ratings are based on teachers' value-added scores -- the reliability of which has been called into question. "This data is based on ONE test taken on ONE day when several variables, such as child poverty, quite possibly will affect student performance," wrote Lea Weinstein, a middle-school teacher, to the New York Times.
