USGS: North Slope could contain significant shale resources

Alaska's North Slope could contain up to 80 trillion cubic feet of shale natural gas and up to 2 billion barrels of shale oil, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Infrastructure and economic considerations have impeded development of the area's shale resources, the USGS said. "Alaska's energy resources hold great promise and economic opportunity for the American people," said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
