IOM workshop finds doctors need help with patient engagement

Physicians need more incentives and training to engage patients in medical decision making, researchers and doctors said at an Institute of Medicine workshop. Data show patients who are more involved in their care have better outcomes and lower costs, but Dr. Eric Holmboe of the American Board of Internal Medicine said the medical profession does not spend enough time helping clinicians develop skills needed to engage patients.
