An institute for advancing digital manufacturing and one for boosting lightweight metals innovation -- through a combination of public and private backing -- were announced this week by President Barack Obama. The Lightweight and Modern Metals Innovation Institute, or LM3I, will be in Detroit, while the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute will be based in Chicago. Both are aimed at developing technologies and markets. "Public-private partnerships are essential to advancing the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing," said Ray Kilmer, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Alcoa, one of the founding members of the LM3I.
