Report: 49% Of Maryland Kindergartners Unprepared For School

The state Department of Education report says 39% of Hispanic children and 37% of black children -- compared with 56% of white children -- are "fully ready" to begin formal schooling. Schools chief Nancy Grasmick says the state needs to beef up academic programs to better prepare students. Some child-education experts say the report may signal that the state's kindergarten curriculum is too difficult for the youngest students.
