Delta, Northwest seek to reassure employees

Executives at both Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines issued internal communications regarding a possible merger on Tuesday. Northwest CEO Doug Steenland said in a letter to employees that the company "continue[s] to believe that consolidation among the network carriers is inevitable" and will "continue to consider strategic alternatives." Meanwhile, Delta's CEO and president issued a joint employee memo touting the company's "strong stand-alone plan" should talks with Northwest fall through.
