HHS official: Law on ties between surgeons, device makers insufficient

U.S. law does not adequately provide for regulation of the financial relationships between device firms and surgeons because of the "high burden of proof" required, an assistant inspector general at the HHS said Wednesday during a Senate committee hearing on the proposed Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which would increase financial-disclosure requirements. AdvaMed said it could support legislative changes on the subject, but under the condition that federal law would override state law.
