AOPA urges careful disposal of ELTs to prevent false alarms

AOPA has teamed up with the Civil Air Patrol on the "Don't Trash the Beacon" campaign to encourage airplane and boat owners to disconnect the batteries from old emergency beacons before disposing of them to prevent their being accidentally activated. Old 121.5/243 MHz emergency locators could accidentally broadcast distress signals if not disposed of with care, causing emergency responders to use time and resources to track down the signal because they have no way of knowing whether it is a true emergency.
