Free ride over for Newsday's online readers?

Users of the Newsday site soon may have to pay for access, as part of the site's shift into a locally oriented cable service, owner Cablevision Systems has said. The change would result in Newsday becoming one of the first major U.S. dailies to try to shift from the free Web-access model to pay-only. Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge said, "We plan to end the distribution of free Web content and make our news gathering capabilities a service for our customers."
