Steel-fiber beams may help concrete buildings in severe earthquakes

A new technique for bracing concrete buildings to withstand earthquakes passed a recent test at the University of Michigan. Researchers simulated a severe earthquake and found that steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams performed better than the beams used in construction today. They also noted that cracks that occurred in the beams were narrower than typical cracks because fibers held the beams together.
