Zale backs away from discounting

Zale has tried to avoid storewide discounting since the holidays and plans to close 115 stores, the jeweler said. For Valentine's Day, the company promoted less-expensive items rather than reduce prices. "Immediately following Christmas, we returned back to a strategy that emphasized emotion with a promotional posture that is item-specific," CEO Neal Goldberg said.
