Net interest margins thrive despite low interest rates

The industry's net interest margin was higher in the third quarter of 2011 than it was from 2005 through late 2009, despite banks' fears that low interest rates set by the Federal Reserve would hurt profitability. For institutions with assets of less than $10 billion, net interest margins have increased for the last 10 straight quarters.
