Faster care needed to prevent diabetic foot amputations

A new report concluded that better care could prevent 80% of the 6,000 diabetes-related amputations that occur each year in the U.K. Among the recommendations for improvement were multidisciplinary foot care teams, a process to identify and monitor those likely to develop foot ulcers and more thorough patient education. "If every hospital had a multi-disciplinary footcare team and ensured access to that team within 24 hours, then that would make a huge difference to the amputation rates," said Diabetes UK Chief Executive Barbara Young.
