Small businesses say word-of-mouth, referral marketing are best

Eighty-seven percent of U.S. small business owners agree that word-of-mouth and customer referrals are the effective marketing tactics, according to a Bank of America survey. Networking efforts and media advertising came in second and third in polling. But SMBs are not impressed with how companies market to them, with 52% saying they are not "effectively" marketed to and 46% saying companies are trying to sell them rather than talk to them, according to an Inc. Magazine and Cargo survey.
