Prenatal screenings that analyze small amounts of fetal DNA found in maternal blood samples may be more accurate at detecting congenital defects than conventional methods, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine. In test results for 2,000 pregnancies, cell-free DNA tests produced false positives at a rate 10 times lower than that of standard screening measures performed later in pregnancy.
