New method converts stem cells into fat cells

Japanese researchers have developed a method that converts stem cells into fat cells, according to a study in the journal Nature Communications. The study team used the protein MKL1 to disassemble the stem cells' actin cytoskeletons, proteins that give shape to cells, reshaping them into fat cells. The method could open doors to future cancer treatments that turn malignant cells into fat as well as obesity therapies that prevent the formation of fat cells, researchers said.
