A ConAgra slaughterhouse in Longmont, Colo., has been listed as the worst U.S. plant in 2001 for salmonella levels, according to the USDA. ConAgra produces Butterball, Healthy Choice and Armour turkeys. There apparently have been no reports of consumers being sickened by salmonella-contaminated turkey from this plant. A ConAgra spokeswoman said the company has improved production and the levels of salmonella are now below 20%. Federal inspectors have been randomly testing 38 plants for the bacteria.
