Democrats Urge Legislation To Ban Farm Antibiotic Use

House Democrats yesterday introduced a bill to ban nontherapeutic use of antibiotics in livestock. Such drugs as penicillin, tetracycline and Cipro are members of the eight drug classes that still could be used to treat sick animals but would be discontinued as growth drugs under the bill. Proponents of the legislation say antibiotic use must be curbed before bacteria become resistant to the drugs.
