Amid competition, Freedom Tower in economic doubt

Citing Freedom Tower leases that would not cover construction costs by the time the tower opens in 2012, real-estate developers Douglas Durst and Anthony Malkin have formed the Continuing Committee for a Reasonable World Trade Center to make the tower's design more attractive to private sector renters. Currently, 40 percent of the building has commitments from federal and state agencies.
