Stevia gains popularity despite lack of FDA OK

Stevia, which is labeled a dietary supplement by the U.S. government, is gaining popularity as a sweetener. Though it has not received FDA approval, many consumers use the substance, which is touted as "an all-natural, calorie-free sweetener that is suitable for diabetics, safe for children and does not cause cavities." It has been used for years in South America, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China and Malaysia without reports of adverse health effects.
