Why struggling companies need disposable bosses

Almost 10% of companies routinely hire temp workers as senior managers, a study by the Institute for Corporate Productivity found. That risks undermining workers' confidence in the long-term viability of their department, experts say, but it can also allow companies to hire disposable leaders to oversee risky or unpleasant tasks such as layoffs and reorganizations. "It can be less painful to have a contingent manager do that," says ICP research chief Lorrie Lykins.
