German agency wants review of sterol-stanol fortified foods

The German food-safety agency BfR is calling for a safety review of plant sterol and stanol consumption, particularly by children and adults without raised cholesterol. BfR cited a 2011 study suggesting possible cardiovascular problems from consumption of plant sterol- and stanol-enriched foods. Industry has responded, noting that the European Food Safety Authority has already performed a review.
