Regulatory working groups tackle forex-derivatives questions

European and international regulatory working groups are trying to establish standards to help determine whether collateral requirements are mandatory for foreign-exchange derivatives not processed through clearinghouses. Market participants are calling on regulators to adopt an approach that would exempt short-dated foreign-exchange swaps and forwards. However, Steven Maijoor, chairman of the European Securities and Markets Authority, warned that the standards likely will be controversial and that new issues could arise from them.
