LaHood, Huerta: Reduce airspace efficiency to maintain safety

In a letter, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said that "we may reduce the efficiency of the national airspace ... to maintain the highest safety standards." More than 100 air traffic control towers at airports with less than 150,000 operations per year could be closed and repairs and preventive maintenance for all National Airspace System equipment could be delayed, LaHood said.
