Man-made sapphire could replace glass in smartphone displays

Industrial sapphire potentially could replace specialty glass in the displays of smartphones if the cost of manufacturing the man-made material can be significantly lowered, this article notes. GT Advanced Technologies has developed the new Advanced Sapphire Furnace for the production of man-made sapphire. The cost of industrial sapphire could come down by 2015, according to GT's Jeff Nestel-Patt.
