Florida Power & Light's St. Lucie nuclear power plant is operating safely, despite reports raising concern about wear on steam generator tubes, writes Joseph Jensen, site vice president of the facility. Steam generator tubes can function safely with more than 60% wear, a point that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will never allow them to reach, he writes. "Like belts in a car engine, a certain amount of wear is expected over time. But, with regular monitoring and inspection, the belt will be removed well before it causes any mechanical issue. The same is true for steam generator tubes," Jensen writes.
