Venter nears carbon dioxide-biofuel breakthrough

Craig Venter, the geneticist who mapped his own genome, on Thursday announced progress in his quest to create a synthetic life form that consumes carbon dioxide to produce fuel. Venter said fourth-generation carbon dioxide fuels may be launched in about 18 months. "We have modest goals of replacing the whole petrochemical industry and becoming a major source of energy," Venter said.
