New school-discipline policies are proposed in Maryland

Maryland's school board on Tuesday released a proposal to limit out-of-school suspensions to 10 days to be used only in cases where school safety is a factor. The board is also calling on schools to develop plans over a three-year period that would reduce suspension rates for students with disabilities and minorities after a recent report showed the two groups to be subject to a disproportionate number of overall suspensions. Following a public comment period, the board in April will introduce changes to the regulations.
