End of transportation law leads to furloughs, funding shutdown

The federal surface transportation authorization law has expired, ending transportation funding for states and forcing the furloughs of thousands of employees. Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., invoked procedural motions to block an extension of the law, saying it would add $10 billion to the nation's deficit. The expiration means states lose out on daily reimbursements of $153.6 million from the Federal Highway Administration and $31.4 million a day from the Federal Transit Administration. Several highway programs also will close until an agreement is reached.
