Few Pa. districts seek money for elementary foreign language classes

Just five Pennsylvania school districts have applied for state funding to start foreign language programs at the elementary level since the state began offering the grants in 2007, officials said. While education officials estimate that about 200 elementary level foreign language programs in the state, some districts have scrapped foreign language programs to cut costs, and others say the decision to include languages in the curriculum is based on community demand.
