Meat allergies may be more common than previously thought

The potential for severe and potentially deadly reactions to meat may be more prevalent in the general population than previously thought, a study says. Researchers found that 25 out of 60 patients with an unexplained severe allergic reaction had immune system proteins called immunoglobulin E antibodies in response to a compound in meat known as alpha-galactose several hours after meat or dairy consumption.
