U.S. rail systems carry 43% of the nation's freight shipments and trains can move a ton of cargo 457 miles on one gallon of fuel, compared with a tractor-trailer, which can transport the same amount only 130 miles, says the Association of American Railroads. In addition, Amtrak transports 78,000 people daily at speeds of up to 150 mph for its for Acela riders.
