America for rent: An evolution toward multifamily construction

In the future, architects may have more multifamily buildings to design than traditional homes. That's because tighter mortgage lending standards will make purchasing a home that much harder. Tight financing conditions will likely also curb the growth of sprawling single-family home subdivisions and boost, on the other hand, denser communities with multi-use apartment buildings. And that means more Americans may remain renters.
