Group develops quality measures for bariatric surgery

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has created a nationwide database to enable bariatric surgeons to compare procedural quality metrics to those of their peers. The group aims to cut in half major bariatric surgery complications by 2017. "If we are successful in doing that, we will not only have the most effective treatment for obesity, but we'll deliver that for patients more safely than we're doing now, and that's a tremendous value for the health care system," group President Dr. Robin Blackstone said.
