Can comic books encourage student reading?

One educator discussing ways to use comic books in the classroom, called comics a "gateway drug" that often can lead students to read novels and other types of literature. Supporters said comics could be used to teach lessons on plot and character development, and also could help struggling readers or those who are learning English as a second language.
