Bishops seek to stifle gay Catholic advocacy

Catholic Cardinal Francis George condemned a Catholic GLBT organization, New Ways Ministry, following a meeting of clergy and laity in Washington, D.C., that served to establish another advocacy organization, Catholics for Equality. Another case involving a cleric -- the Rev. Geoffrey Farrow, who was removed after coming out as gay and denouncing the Church's support for anti-gay rights legislation such as Proposition 8 in California -- has galvanized the gay faithful, who say that the bishops do not speak for the majority of the Catholic laity.
