Planners consider converting S.F. Bay waterfront parking lots into park

A 1.5-mile-long strip of parking lots across from the Port of Oakland at the foot of the Bay Bridge could become a 50-acre park -- "visually bold to attract funding" -- when construction begins on the new eastern span of the bridge. Meanwhile, a local newspaper columnist has suggested leaving one segment of the old bridge and topping it with wind turbines and solar panels.
