India to pay families to promote girls' welfare

in an attempt to battle gender-based abortion that has seen an estimated 10 million baby girls aborted over the last two decades, Indian authorities have announced plans to pay families who raise girls. The plan would have the government pay families incremental sums, with the largest payout occurring when a girl child reaches 18, is in good health and has received basic education.
