Genetically engineered HIV is capable of infecting monkeys

U.S. researchers developed a strain of human HIV that can infect and spread in monkeys. The simian-tropic HIV-1, created by altering a gene in the human form of the virus, might enable researchers to screen experimental AIDS drugs and vaccines in animals before they are tested on humans.
