Oklahoma doesn't count middle-school dropouts in dropout rate

More than 1,030 Oklahoma students dropped out of middle school during the 2006-07 school year, but state regulations limit the definition of dropout to those who have begun their freshman year of high school, according to a Tulsa World analysis of state education data. While Oklahoma classifies such middle-school dropouts as chronic truants, many other states classify them as dropouts and include them in their dropout-rate calculations.
