With layoffs causing workers to take on additional jobs, small-business owners need to take preventive measures to keep workers safe, implement appropriate training and review federal and state safety rules. Employers with good safety records improve their bottom line because they pay less for worker's comp, their productivity is higher and fewer workers leave, says Donald Shalhoub of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
