Cost may be hurdle for earthquake-resistant technology

Engineers have developed earthquake-resistant building codes, but countries' adoption of the codes may depend on economic conditions. Buildings that incorporate earthquake-resistant technology can cost up to 10% more to build. "The countries that have not adopted the codes tend to be poorer countries, and perhaps the degree of sophistication or commitment to code enforcement is also an issue in these countries," said Michael Armstrong, senior vice president of the International Code Council.
