APPA: Having a pet dog costs about $1,400 a year

According to APPA, dog ownership costs about $1,400 a year, with $225 of that spent on veterinary visits. The association also says that almost 40% of households in the U.S. include one or more dogs. Families looking for a pet dog should tell shelter or Human Society workers "what they are looking for in a pet and let the people that deal with the animals set them in the right direction," said Cascades Humane Society's Sue Chambers.
