California Parents Object To Section In Social Studies Textbook

Parents in two California districts say Houghton Mifflin's "Across the Centuries," a seventh-grade social studies textbook, proselytizes Islam. The Pacific Justice Institute, a nonprofit legal defense organization representing the parents, says it does not want the book banned; rather, it seeks supplemental corrections. A Houghton Mifflin spokesman says the book "has been applauded for years as an objective look at many different religions."
