Upper house of French Parliament passes headscarf ban

The French Senate voted 276-20 to approve a bill banning Muslim headscarves and other conspicuous religious symbols in state schools. Most French political parties and about 70% of the population support the measure, which President Jacques Chirac is expected to sign into law within the next 15 days.
