In a recently leaked memo, Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz confessed that he felt the coffee chain's stores had lost some of their atmosphere and aroma, owing to changes in the way their coffee is packaged and prepared. Commentator Daniel Gross notes that the efficiencies demanded by publicly held companies don't necessarily align with the values that make consumers love a brand.
