Modified HIV strain to enable research

Scientists have created a genetically engineered strain of HIV that can infect and proliferate in monkeys, enabling them to test a future AIDS vaccine on the animals. The simian-tropic HIV-1 strain, while not identical to the human virus, will allow scientists to create a simian vaccine, then "make the leap of faith that the same approach would work equivalently in humans," one of the researchers said.
