Promotion is expected for Calif. assistant city manager

The Carlsbad, Calif., City Council has appointed Assistant City Manager John Coates as city manager. An approval vote is scheduled next week. Coates, interim manager since November, "has the vision, style and experience we need to help Carlsbad continue on our path to becoming a truly world-class organization," Mayor Matt Hall said. "His collaborative approach to leadership and commitment to working with the community make him a great fit for Carlsbad." Coates joined the city in 2010 as director of the Parks & Recreation Department.
